The Hunger Games & The Harry Potter Alliance

June 26, 2015

The Harry Potter Alliance launched "The Odds in Our Favor" campaign to mobilize fans of The Hunger Games to join the fight to raise the minimum wage.

The Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) – a group that originally started as a few fans who wanted to take the good messages of their favorite book series and enact them in the world has become one of the best examples of “fan activism.” HPA isn’t entirely focused on HP-themed causes and often organizes campaigns of awareness, fundraising and community service with other fandoms.

During the release of Mockingjay, HPA encouraged folks to contribute to the hashtag #MyHungerGames, intending the feed to become an archive of the real effects and complexity of extreme income inequality, one of the main themes of the Hunger Games. The group created the website, oddsinourfavor.org, which housed member selfies with the Hunger Games’ distinctive three-fingered salute, offered resources to understand the source and severity of income and links to contact members of Congress to encourage them to raise the minimum wage.
